Škoda hits the high notes with Scala

ŠKODA AUSTRALIA’S FIRST RELEASE for the year is a brand-new nameplate – the Scala compact hatchback. We seem to keep on saying this, but the struggling brand really does need a winner in its line-up

Scala is the penultimate model in Škoda’s evolution as a mainstream European brand, a positioning that is now stronger with the recent debut of the Kamiq 85TSI compact SUV (which will be followed into showrooms in February by the Kamiq 110TSI range).

Visually the Scala is executed in Škoda’s latest, highly distinctive design language as per Kodiaq, Karoq and Superb models while embodying Škoda Australia’s ethos of ‘more car for the money’. Standard specification – in terms of safety, convenience and infotainment systems – is impressive, but for some inexplicable reason the brand just can’t seem to get traction in the Australian market.

Skoda design cues obvious

On sale this month, the Scala will be offered in with a 110TSI turbocharged petrol engine, driven through either a six-speed manual or seven- speed DSG transmission, across three range variants: 110TSI, Monte Carlo and, initially, the Launch Edition.

Though ostensibly the ‘entry level’ variant, the 110TSI model grade features as standard items usually found in more expensive, brands. Standard exterior features include full LED tail lights with dynamic (sweeping) rear indicators, 18-inch alloy wheels and tinted privacy glass.

Technology highlights include adaptive cruise control, automatic tailgate, Smartlink integration with Apple Carplay and Android Auto with wireless charging (a first for Škoda and presaging its roll out across the range), as well as Front and Lane Assist systems.

Virtual cockpit offers plenty of alternative screens

The innovative Virtual Cockpit, with a 10.25-inch high definition colour display, is also standard across the range. A newly prominent infotainment system (8-inch on 110TSI and Monte Carlo variants and 9.2-inches on Launch Edition) provides a full suite of apps and services at the fingertips, while red ambient lighting completes the interior layout.

The Monte Carlo and Launch Edition build on this base. In the Monte Carlo this includes signature red styling in the sports seats and standard panoramic sunroof; in the Launch Edition leather trim and, for the first time, wireless Smartlink connectivity in the Launch Edition.

The Scala range is available now from Škoda’s national dealer network, and also for online orders. Like all Škoda’s the Scala comes with a five year/unlimited kilometre warranty, capped price servicing every calendar year, and the option to purchase pre-paid service Care Packs for either two or four years.

Good luggage area for the class (and useful restraining nets)
